An Introduction to Social Media for Charities

Earlier this year we were invited by Jackie Dawkins of Cathedral Appointments to join forces with James Barisic of everys Solicitors to deliver a presentation introducing Social media to Charities throughout the South west.

We are pleased to report that the event, which took place on November 18th, was a great success. Following are a few highlights:

– Today’s web is all about Social media – which, in turn, is all about sharing, engaging and communicating with like-minded individuals

– Social networks and blogs are the 4th most popular online activities – beating personal email

– Through a plethora of tools and features, including discussions forums, blogs, videos, photos, instant messaging, etc…. these sites quickly become a part of the day-to-day life of their users, who develop a rapport with, and trust in, fellow members.

Optix Solutions client Devon Air Ambulance Trust PR Manager Sarah Burden summed up the importance of embracing and having a Social media strategy with the following quote:

“Our target audience is the entire community, all ages, interests and abilities; people have the highest expectations of us for transparency and accountability; we need to raise funds, friends and corporate supporters; we have merchandise to market; we need to involve and support volunteers and supporters; we need to report our activities.”

Special thanks again to Jackie Dawkins and her team at Cathedral Appointments for inviting us to present. I am sure everyone will agree with us when we say that James Barisic was a fantastic co-host throughout the night – thanks for being so fun to work with James. And last, but by no means least, to our very own Alistair Gleave from all us here at Optix – well done.
