The myth that Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is some kind of ‘black art’ and that there is nothing you can do to improve it really is exactly that…a myth. The truth is you can do some basic things yourself. To help you get started, here are 3 simple tips.
The key is to always be proactive and to get advice from experts as to what you should and shouldn’t be doing when it comes to SEO so that you can avoid making costly mistakes.
1.) Why “Content is king”
Working out what your prospects might be searching for is the first thing you should take into consideration when writing any content. Once you have identified this information you can then use it to write articles that are related to what they are looking for. For example, a skiwear company might write articles about the top 5 skis that you can buy in 2013 as their prospect might be searching for the latest skis that are coming onto the market. Always try to choose content that relates to your business, so that when your prospect enters keywords into search that are linked to what you sell or what your company offers, it will be your website that is displayed in the search results and not your competitors.
2.) Don’t use meta tags, use title tags
Meta tags are page data tags that lie in the head section of the HTML code of a page. They are not displayed on the page itself but give web browsers information about the page. For example a meta tag may look something like this:
<META name=”description” content=”This is where you place your web page’s description”>
<META name=”keywords” content=”place your keywords here”>
It is a common myth that adding meta tags will help optimise your website for search engines. Instead, the one element that is crucial to consider is that of the title tag. For example a title tag might read: <title> Award Winning Cheddar Cheese </title>. A title tag is something that is read by a search engine and will be displayed in the search results, therefore it is important to be both descriptive as well as concise when creating it.
3.) Gain quality links to your website
A website linking to another website is perceived as ‘a vote’ by Google and the more relevant that link is to your website, the higher quality that vote is considered to be. The best way to start obtaining links is to speak to your clients and anyone that you think will be prepared to link to you. Alternatively, you can generate links using the process of ‘link baiting’, which is where you create something valuable that people want to share, for example a tool that people will find useful such as an infographic or whitepaper.
Each link to your website is read by Google – whether it’s through Facebook, Twitter or elsewhere, therefore the more links you have, the more likely it is that your website will be displayed in search results.
